[WATCH] Google’s Amazing Location-Aware Search Finds Answers About Nearby Places

How tall is that tower in front of you? What’s the name of a river you’re near? What time does a store you’re looking at close? Google’s new “location-aware” search can answer questions like these, even if you yourself don’t know the exact name of something you’re near.

Google demonstrated the feature at our SMX Paris search marketing event yesterday. It’s relatively new, having been released several weeks ago both for Android and for those using the Google Search App on iOS. But Google never made a formal announcement about it, so few have known you can do this type of searching, until now.

That's so cool. Google is really all-seeing, all-knowing. Almost spooky!

Thanks for sharing Justin!

Reading this whilst at home so can't really try the feature out properly. Looking forward to giving it a test run tomorrow though :)

Hi there:

Following up on this Google "feature" and would be curious if:

  • Does anyone know from where Google is pulling the answers? I could speculate, but what fun is that! (GMB, Maps)
  • Has anyone tried exploiting this? Perhaps it's too new, not yet heavily adopted, there isn't a method, etc....
  • Since this is voice search oriented, I'm not sure if there are any additional steps we can take (or need to take) to make sure our clients digital footprint responds to this search
  • If there is any adoption rate information available for this feature (Here is a study from last Oct Official Google Blog: OMG! Mobile voice survey reveals teens love to talk)
  • Whether this type of search can be tracked through Google Analytics assuming the user clicks through to one of the business's website

Any insights are appreciated.

Tim

Whoa. Very cool. But, as Linda said, kind of scary.

Coupled with Google Glass, what could possibly go wrong? :)

SKYNET is live! It will be interesting to follow this and see how far Google can take it. Also, it will be interesting to see what type of adoption this has and the effect it will have on how users search. It could mean searchers start using more generic based search queries based on their location because it simply works without naming the actual business or building.
