From what I've read over the years the internal links that point to error pages make Google continue to crawl them and reduce crawl efficiency. So even though you 404 or 410 a page, if there are still internal links to those dead pages, that continues to affect the crawling and how often Google...
I actually hadn't even thought about doing a 410. It makes sense as it would instantly delist it with Google, but we also have a fairly small site relatively speaking. If I had 5k pages, maybe it would be worth it to save crawl budget, but I hadn't considered it for a non-ecommerce site.
For the articles that can be redirected or rewritten, we're doing that. So any of our articles on how to use Schema, content creation, header tags etc, those are all either staying, redirecting or rewritten. But anything that doesn't match what we're doing, we do a strict 404 on it. No...
