I would think linking to authority sites in content may not help with rankings specifically, but it should add to the quality of your content. Better quality content would lead to a better user experience, and wouldn't that ultimately help with rankings?
I thought it was in testing earlier this year. I notice that symbol on occasion and was able to replicate it on your search. According to Whitespark, it's not available in the dashboard.

I prefer using the non-www version of my website URL to make it shorter. All I do for search engines is use Google Webmaster Tools (now Search Console) Site Settings to tell Google which one is the preferred domain.

Google becomes a part of Alphabet.
Everything internet-related (search, Gmail, etc.) would stay under Google.
Products outside of Google (glucose-sensing contact lenses, self-driving cars, etc.) would be just under Alphabet.
