Google often favors small local businesses over big brands

Hello Local Search Forum members:

I´ve noticed with several big chains with presence almost all over the US, that they perform poorly in Google 3 Pack results.

I was also reading an article in Brightlocal where they confirm my assumption in a way.

What are the reasons for this to happen? Thanks in advance.
