Good post and link.
I am sure that many SMBs did not notice or do not care, one reason they may not care is because it is so hard understanding all this stuff and takes so much time. The other reason may be because of other places to advertise.
I am guessing the new local business ads in S.F...
Does Un-Verifying mean that these listings get removed?
Or does it mean the many listings on the big G, I would say close to half are out of business, wrong NAP, ETC, will just have a g+ page over a website and lose some ranking but still show up, many in the top 10!
Years later trying to be...
I reported as spam and each location with all the links and a brief explanation. Was this a good way?
When spam gets reported, Google handles it well if its two locations or less, but three locations or more I noticed its much harder for Google to see the whole picture.
Is the Google Product...

"I think you are referring to a search like Dallas Painter or Dallas Plumber??? Is that right?"
Yes.
In the organic serps I noticed that when entering the towns with the keywords a lot of sites are not ranking as well as they were prior to 10/18/14 But when entering just the keywords, sites are...
When searching for lets say painters you enter keywords and towns and you should get good serps, but since the last google update/refresh around 10/18/14 I have noticed that when entering the keywords with the towns a lot of businesses are not showing up, and I tried this from different...
"Without enforcement, "guidelines" and "laws" become jokes & myths"
This online thing is still in the wild wild west days, just now are we seeing some railroads.
"Our own wonderful Phil Rozek gets a say, and know what? I think he's spot on when he says "We’ll probably see some pay-to-play action in the local results." (Not that he needs my opinion, I simply happen to think he's right" :-)
The sooner the better (pay to play)
The local listings on google, bing and yahoo are a mess with a bunch of dupes, spam, and what I see a lot of, is businesses that have been closed for a while.
At least they should check and see if these businesses are still opened. Dupes should be very easy for the search engines. Spam can be...
@ Linda
I knew something was different with Yahoo, I was just hoping they would put more into the search and local (maybe with Alibabas help) since Yahoo now has some extra funds.
I remember 20 years ago when I was a teen, Yahoo was the place with great board and card games, Yahoo was what...
"I can't figure out how to get around this either."
Today I signed up for the Yahoo local enhanced listing, which is $9.95 a month.
Lets you add more pics, cats, and what I like the most (hopefully easy to update) is you get a green check mark that says merchant verified on local. For the price...
I still see a lot of SABs with no storefronts and no hidden addresses. Is Google still cracking down on this?
The ones who are not staffed during business hours.
I updated my listing a few weeks ago and now I would like to update again, but I cant.
Signed in or not.
Verify your listing takes you to a scan.
