It could cause confusion/merges if you're trying to create a new profile with the same number. It's best to set it up with a new number and make that number forward to your real number. You can get a new number at many online sources, like phone dot com, NumberBarn, CallRail.
There is always a risk of reverification, but in my experience, it's a low risk on name changes. It's almost guaranteed with address changes, it's likely with phone changes, and it's possible (but low risk) with name changes.

Here's what I think is happening with Q&A:
- Q&A on the front end will be replaced with their AI-driven "Ask Maps"
- Q&A management will still exist in the backend (NMX)
- When the AI has an answer, it gives it
- When the AI doesn't have the answer, and enough people ask the same or similar...

I have seen a case where the rankings moved 200 miles north to the middle of the desert. The business never had any presence up there. Seems similar to your case.
Are your edits still pending? I'd wait a few more days before concluding the change of the service area had no impact.

Has the business ever moved?
Is the address that was showing on the profile the same address as where the profile was originally verified?
Looking at the listing and the service area, it's very interesting that the rankings have shifted...
This intrigued me, so we ran some queries in the Whitespark Local Platform software, which tracks updates across 12,000+ Google Business Profiles. We are seeing no uptick in updates. The volume is about the same as always.
