How does a business get the knowledge graph?

The knowledge graph is algorithmically based. There isn't anything specific you can do to have it show up.

I think that you can increase the chances that the Local Knowledge Graph shows up if you ensure you have a good local seo foundation: quality citations, reviews...etc. Basically, give Google a reason to display it.

Linking your website to your Local G+ page can help as well (publisher mark-up)
