This is easy, all you have to do is upload the picture in places dashboard, Just make sure it is the first picture you upload. Also If you have Local+ page set it as profile picture. Hope I helped.

Well actually it's a TONNNNNNN more complicated than that.

No just adding pic to Google Places dash won't do anything.
(And no don't make your pic the 1st pic in Places.)

Even added as profile pic to G+ won't do anything.

It's quite complicated and there is more than one way to do it.
