If a shortname is changed, will the previous shortname(s) redirect to the new one?

We have recently taken over a listing for our client and would like to change the shortname. If people try to look up the business using the old one, will it redirect to the new one or just link to a dead end?

If you change it, I would not expect the old one to continue to work.

Changing the business name will redirect to the new one. The same principle should also apply for shortnames though I've never tried this. I've only tried changing the business name & the redirection worked well for many years after the business name had been changed.
