Issues with multiple domain redirects to one domain?

Today are there any issues with redirecting five domains into one. Leadership wishes to consolidate 5 separate websites into one. As SEO what do I need to know about this approach? Is this an acceptable strategy? I will provide more detail if needed...

I don't think the amount of sites makes a difference. The most important thing I see is to avoid redirecting everything to the home page. Instead, redirect pages to existing similar pages.

What Yan said. Also, I would try to redirect any URLs that have either backlinks or significant landing page traffic.
