Happy new year, everyone!

Specific question: Does anyone in the healthcare space know if there's a meaningful intent difference between 'diagnostic center' and 'medical diagnostic imaging center?'

I've seen competitors using both of these as their primary categories and when I search for 'diagnostic center,' it seems to fulfill roughly the same intent as the more specific alternative. I had to double check because 'diagnostic center' sounded generic enough that it could be interpreted as either medical or automotive.

Broader questions:
  • Is there a place where we can find additional contextual information on GBP categories to better understand how they should be used?
  • When you find two close matches for a primary category, how do you choose? Look at what most of your near competitors go with? Choose the higher-volume term? Or, as always, does it just depend?
    • I ran into a similar situation for an apartment client with 'apartment building' vs 'apartment complex' previously; there may be precise definitions for each of these terms, but at a glance they seem to be synonymous.

Hi Jared,

Great questions. According to this MapMaker Category Descriptions sheet, the difference between these 2 categories is:

Diagnostic Center: A medical institution that collects and analyzes tissue samples for pathological indications.

Medical Diagnostic Imaging Center: A medical facility that specializes in medical imaging. Medical imaging comprises different imaging modalities and processes to image human body for diagnostic.

So according to Google, they are different in terms of the services they provide. You'll want to pick the category that best fits the services your business provides. these are close, but not 100% the same.

When picking the primary category, it's important to know what the competition is doing, but also you'll want to check for the best categories to use based on the specific keyword(s) you want to rank for. This tool from Plepper is designed to help you choose the most relevant categories for your business based on keywords.
