Hey guys,

I don't know if I'm sharing my excitement or my fears on this post :) We're getting ready to purge over 400 articles from our website. Very few of them are going to be redirects, most will actually be a full delete.

All of the articles are from 2011 to 2016. They were written in a time where content mattered, but consistency mattered a little bit more. The articles covered SEO stuff, Web Design, PPC and web hosting assistance. We no longer manage PPC and haven't for the past 5 years, so we're doing a full delete on all of those. Everything from what tools to use for tracking to how to do the keyword research in Google Ads Tools. Pretty much all the articles from 2005-2011 were killed off, so much has changed over the years!

Most of the articles are not deep enough - if they hit 400-600 words, we knocked it on the head and pushed it out. Today's content is much different. And rewriting some of the old content really isn't worth it. Content talking about algorithm updates, Hummingbird, and the like, really just needs to be killed on our site and let others document the history.

I don't expect much of a difference in terms of traffic coming to our site - most of the articles are not generating any traffic these days, but internal links etc will be affected.

We'll purge this big batch, then likely another 200+ articles in a few months that are newer and again, cover things we don't do anymore - social media, video, etc! Facebook cover image sizes, Facebook posts, Twitter stuff, Photoshop tips, etc - while helpful to our clients back in the day, they're just not needed these days. We're better off sending the users to a resource than trying to keep up with trends and features of systems we don't use.

Essentially, the big purge is redefining our audience and who we want to attract. We redefined that persona a number of years ago internally, and our newer articles are geared at specific audiences, but we never revised/deleteed the content that could be sending mixed signals.

So, wish us luck!

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, wouldn’t it be better to redirect all these pages to the homepage or some other similar but newer article?
