Is Backlinks Still major ranking secret in 2026?

Not really. There is some value in high quality referrals and citations but there are far better ways to rank a site.

I wouldn't think "secret" when I think of backlinks; however, when I think of "internal links," it's almost like that is a secret, as it seems nobody knows they should do it - and that's a big deal.

It wont help your GBP ranking. Might rank your site on page 1 for local though, but many people dont scroll past the local pack anyway
