Is it best practice to include the business city in the "Service Area" section?

Hi there,

I have a dentist client in Georgia. They've selected a number of areas under the "Service Area" section that they want to attract patients from.

Is it best practice to have various areas selected there or to leave it blank? Just curious if having specific areas chosen would hinder rankings or improve it.

We've tested this and found that adding the service area does not currently impact rankings Does the Service Area in Your Google Business Profile Impact Ranking? - Sterling Sky Inc

If you have the address showing, which I assume this client does being a dentist, the service area outline will not show in maps so there is really no reason to add this.

It is against the guidelines if a company is not doing face-to-face business in those areas, in other words, if the dentist is not going to the customer's location (which I don't think they will), they cannot add service areas.
