Yeah, that appears to be the solution for the ones I've been talking to thusfar. The steps to take are:

  1. Ask the primary owner of the business to login at Account settings: Your browser is not supported.
  2. Advise them to attempt to access Update your browser to use Google My Business - Google My Business Help
    1. They should be presented with another log-in screen, advise them to login again.
    2. They should be presented another screen requesting them to verify their identity through SMS
    3. If there is no option to verify via SMS, proceed to the next step.
 
Thanks @KymM did some screen sharing with my client and got that form submitted, will see if that can clear this up!

Also gave me a chance to see what Google Account he was using (clients never seem to get Google Accounts it seems).
