I have been monitoring some dramatic fluctuations for my main landing page. I am still pretty new to SEO (Two and a half years in).
Basically my main landing page will rank incredibly well for days at a time then drop off the map... and then return at a high ranking for the local keywords I am wanting to rank for. It's been happening for a few weeks now. I am looking into some possible keyword canibalization with my location page but I am a bit perplexed.
I don't think I have experienced this type of constant fluctuation, even in the midst of an update cycle.

Has anyone else had experience with this type of SERP behavior?
Any thoughts on possible things to look at?

Sounds like it could be a potential filter issue. Are there any other businesses that offer the same services that are in your building or across the street from you?

Hi Joy, Thank you for responding! That is a possibility. There is similar business in the building next to ours. Similar address but with a building letter and suite number. It hasn't been an issue in the past but after looking more closely that company is on the first page now. Things are pretty volatile at the moment so I usually try not to panic, but the SERP behavior wasn't something familiar.

Usually what you will see with filtering is they take the spot (or close to it) that you have when you see yourself ranking.

Did OP say it was GBP or organic? @Foureyes - It sounded like you were mentioning organic listings, not local/GBP listing correct?

If so, I've been seeing this like crazy across a few sites. Specifically one's that we've been making some significant improvements to over the last several weeks (or intended content improvements I should say)... I can't pinpoint if this is intended, or a big glitch causing organic volatility but it's an insane drop we've seen week to week (March 1st and then March 7th).

I've attached an example of this new client we've been working with for a couple months. One week it looks like we're starting to make some good gains, then this week it drops off a cliff (even though the pages are still indexed). I've never seen a site rank top 10 for a money KW like "dentist city/state" but be non existent for the same "dentist city" variation.

I've checked hosting, hosting redirect rules, search console, caching plugins.... basically any technical glitch that could have happened. Can't find anything wrong.

But GBP hasn't budged.🤷‍♂️

Hi Cody, Yes, organic searches for local search terms. My GBP data looks steady as well.

Are you tracking only the main URL or internal URLs? Both cities or the opposite sides of Rancho Cucamonga. Look at how Smile Studio Dentistry does theirs. Upland and Fontana are on two different domains. Each website specially targets the city the dental practice is located in. The websites I am seeing for the dentist Upland CA and dentist Fontana CA are only targeting and focused on the city related to the search.

Barry Schwartz @rustybrick is reporting that the ranking volatility is still high since the February discovery core update finished rolling out.
