There are many ways to create WhatsApp links but the only one that works for the Google Business Profile contact feature is this one:
Examples:
Use: https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX
Don't use: https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX
Also, you will not see a change or button on the live profile yet as Google is still rolling out:

Use Open WhatsApp<number> where the <number> is a full phone number in international format. Omit any zeroes, brackets, or dashes when adding the phone number in international format.Examples:
Use: https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX
