Have you kept the uploaded file there for 24-48 hours? Or are you just seeing 'rejected' upon first uploading it?
Most images we upload all say rejected at first, but a day or two later they are approved.

Google already makes automated calls to verify GBP data, like addresses, work hours...etc. This isn't a big step from what they already do and is a quick/easy way to get the FAQs answered. I haven't seen it before, but seems legit.
His website does mention that he is from Virginia and that he went to school there. That could be enough for Google to associate his name to Virginia? Other than that, I can't see anything sticking out.
Not necessarily. But, the more data Google has ahead of time the easier the verification process can be. But Google does whatever they want whenever they want, so no guarantees one way or the other.

You would want to change your site/domain inside Google Search Console too:

And update your Google Analytics to the new URL.
It seems they tend to be filtering "new" reviewers and "1 and done" reviewers. Similar to Yelp.
Perhaps if these people continue to leave reviews elsewhere and build up their profile, they may get unfiltered?
I know when I see "1 review" on a profile, I question it as legit, so perhaps that is...
Unless you are linking to a page/website that has content that goes against their policies, I have never heard of any issue. I always put a link in the description and see links there all the time.
