I have a friend that's been pursuing Calligraphy really heavily for a few years now (hours a day of monk-like practice, haha) and has built a pretty good following on Instagram. Interesting hearing him talk about some of the other people with online followings and the behind-the-scenes drama... all you need to build an audience is to regularly publish content and get it in front of new people, it doesn't necessarily take 'good' content. There's one or two people in particular apparently in the community there that publish a lot of historically inaccurate information, or technically incorrect work. The average Joe can't tell the difference though, which can be problematic if you're looking for a good calligraphy mentor that'll actually steer you straight. The modern information publishing scene and the whole 'guru' thing is kind of fascinating from a psychology standpoint, but it definitely makes it a little tough when you're first getting into something new and don't know how to recognize bad advice. Not ripping on Neil in particular of course, I don't know much about him either way, just an interesting topic.
At the end of the day, any consultant that's really serious will need to get their hands dirty and even run some of their own tests to verify their assumptions, but for the rest... well. Hopefully you happen to find the right people to listen to if you're a business owner with a million other things on your plate.
