Dramatic differences in Google Organic results

In monitoring my google SERP results for important keyword phrases i am seeing dramatic difference, both between very similar keywords and more importantly between periodic checks of the same keywords. Sometimes I am 3 or 4, sometimes not even on the first page. Sometimes sites I have never seen rank highly are way ahead of me, just a real fruit basket turnover. Is google local in some kind of transition period?

Are you checking these manually or with a ranking report?

Manually. both "regular" and in incognito mode.

Yeah, it's tough to know what's going on without data.

I have no idea what the culprit would be. It could be anyone's guess.

I haven't seen any dramatic fluctuation myself lately.
