You have no doubt heard me say "Dupes are the bane of my existence!" Well today's post is all about duplicate listings. Not Google dupes, but the root cause of those dupes! Bad citation and directory data!
I have an important and eye opening webinar video for you AND a dynamite free white paper!
But 1st, it's important to know how the data sources work and how duplicates become a problem to begin with, so here is a screenshot that explains. It was taken from the white paper, that Yext is graciously providing to forum members, which includes a ton more info and is available at the bottom of this post.
It's somewhat easy for the human eye to sort through and make decisions about that data. We have reasoning power. It’s much harder to train a computer to do this consistently.
Plus publishers must build algorithms that analyze which records are the same across and cluster them. Every publisher has a different set of criteria and different software to attempt to reconcile the duplicates.
OK so now that you understand maybe a little more about how dupes are created, let's learn more about the deeper duplicate issues and what to do about them.
Below is a webinar with BIA Kelsey, Yext and Andrew Shotland about duplicates. There is lot of excellent information shared during the hour-long conversation between the three speakers. Plus in addition to the presentation and discussion, they took questions from the audience via chat, and dismissed a number of myths about how/why duplicates occur in the ecosystem.
So handling duplicates is complicated and you can't always delete them. Even if you could it's not always the best option. As explained, suppression is a better option. If you want to learn more about how suppression works here are some resources.
DUPLICATE SUPPRESSION RESOURCES
Casey Meraz from Ethical SEO Consulting actually just did a great post this week:
<a href="http://www.ethicalseoconsulting.com/local-seo/yext-duplicate-suppression-analysis/">Yext Duplicate Suppression Analysis | Ethical SEO Consulting</a>
Andrew Shotland wrote a post about duplicate suppression which serves as the best high-level overview of dupe suppression that I've seen: Yext Duplicate Listings Suppression Launches.
And here's a detailed post from Yext about how their duplicate suppression works:
A Partner's View of Duplicate Suppression.
Plus Christian wrote a great post for members here about the issue of <a href="http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/yext-forum/22690-duplicate-suppression-vs-deletion.html">Duplicate Suppression vs. Deletion</a>.
Oh and if you are sick and tired of fighting dupes, Yext even has a game so you can work off frustration!
(Wish this game was around when I was working on all those Dentist dupes!)
IMPORTANT - The average local search consultant does not know the info I just shared with you. I guarantee that if you invest the time to delve into the video & white paper it will give you a big edge over the competition and probably save you time/headaches by fully understanding the cause of the duplicate data problem!
Yext has a lot of important new research they are close to releasing about duplicate issues.
Once it's published I'll be sure to add a link here.
Let me know if you have questions. I'll get Christian or Aarthi to drop by with answers.
What do you think???
Below is Andrew Shotland's excellent white paper and it's just jam packed with information!
Yext allowed me to share it with you without you even having to register to get it. DOWNLOAD BELOW.
