Less towns = higher ranking?

If I reduce my service area, in other words reduce the towns listed on my GBP, will I rank higher on the areas/towns that remain?

I have about 20 areas/towns listed, and yes I will service all those areas/towns, but my really really focused target market is about 8 of those areas/towns. If I reduce the GBP to list just those areas will I rank higher there?

Any thoughts on improving GBP target marketing is appreciated!!

Service areas still don't seem to impact ranking, but if you test this out and notice otherwise please report back!

I've only seen it make a difference for truly unnecessarily large areas such the entire Canadian province or country.
