Our company recently took over a contract to run a store space on campus at a university. We're coming in and operating a store that is pretty similar to the store that was there previously. We gained ownership of the GBP for the store in that location, but decided to mark it as permanently closed rather than re-branding it because it had several hundred terrible reviews.

6 months later, and the old "closed" listing is still consistently showing up first for searches related to campus stores for this university. We've marked the old store as permanently closed, updated the name on the old listing to say "(Now [new store name]), updated the description to say the old store closed and the new store has opened, changed the website, and changed the phone number but it's still showing up.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to try? The university has put out press releases with links to the correct site and updated information that's being picked up by AIs but Google refuses to let the old store listing drop off the SERPs.
