Hey Guys,

Just wanted to clarify best practices on the categories we should use and further optimization to support the seaosnal changes.

In this case im talking about a single location HVAC company.

The consesnus is to swap out Heating or Air conditioning categories which I get,

What is a little more confusing is the exact categories

Just read the post from Elizabeth Rue suggesting swapping out

Heating contractor / Air conditioning Service

and Ive just listening to a podast with Darren Shaw who Suggested

Furnace Repair / Air Conditioning Repair

So my first question is the default more Broad or service specific? and what might be some nueances that affect that decision?

for the record the client im looking for this, thier bright local GEO grid report is showing more top competitors using things like "Air Conditioning Repair" even on the heating keywords, im not seeing "Heating Contracrtor or Air Conditioing Service as a main category for any of them.

2nd question: we are updating the homepage as well I assume for a single location? from Air Conditioning to Heating? and vica versa with the category change?

Thanks in advance

Elizabeth is from the US and Darren is from Canada. I suspect they chose the categories they picked because of what is common where they are from. With that being said, the best way is to search for both terms and use the category that shows up the most. When I searched for furnace repair, only one business showed up in the map pack the other two were HVAC contractor.

To be clear, these are the best Google Business Profile categories for HVAC businesses for each season (at least in the US):
  • Best GBP category for the fall/winter: Furnace repair service
  • Best GBP category for the spring/summer: Air conditioning repair service
That is, if they are looking to target "furnace repair" and "AC repair" keywords. Keep in mind, not all HVAC businesses do furnace repair; for example, in FL, they don’t really have furnaces!

My article may have been vague to account for all types of businesses, and the general consensus is to focus on heating when it's cold and cooling when it's not. You need to pick the best categories based on the business's actual services, but in general, the ones above are the best to use.
