Hi, we have several party entertainment websites that service the whole country. We send entertainers to bachelorette, bachelor and birthday parties. We had about 2500 pages for each website. When we hired our new SEO in late April, we told him we thought we should prune about 75% of those pages and rewrite the content to make it about 70% unique.
He thought it was risky to prune pages and only had us rewrite about 20-40% of the sites. The traffic is about half of what it was when we started with him. It is about 20% of what it was about a year ago.

We have had horrible experiences with SEO'S in the past, but this one actually seems to know what he is doing. He's friends with Kyle Roof and puts a ton of effort into learning. He admits he was too conservative and is doing everything to help us rebuild. He is a very hard worker and quick to help us.

We are pruning about 70% of the pages. He thinks that will help quite a bit, but we disagree. It will help our crawl budget, but we know Google wants unique content. My husband is a great writer and has devised ways to make the content unique without the AI slop.

We have another site that was a simple five pager that served the whole country. We are building it out into a 400 page site with 80-90% unique content. He says to only make about 2-3 new pages max a day. Also says to not use the same layout on each page. It makes it harder for us to change the layout with DIVI for each page.

We would appreciate any opinions with these questions.

1) How many pages can you rewrite a day? We are changing the duplicate content into unique pages.

2) How many new pages can be built on the 20 year old website that used to just have five pages?

3) Do the page designs really need to be different to satisfy Google?

4) Does pruning 70% of a website that received about 5% of the traffic usually help move the traffic back up?

5) Does changing the content 20%-40% really help or is it too little effort?

Thank you,

Caria

Wow! There is a lot to unpack there.

Without seeing the website isn't not really possible to answer your questions. Updating pages may help but it may also hinder things. It's not the number of pages. You can rank well across a range of keywords with just a few pages if you target niche keywords. Or you can expand your scope with a set of curated posts targeting locations and services.

There is no single answer and I suspect you will need to adopt a range of techniques. Don't do anything for now. Sack your SEO (they are useless) and post the URLs of your site(s) so we can take a look.
