Oops, sorry my mistake, I had meant if as an example I were to place my site's links on someone else's site, will that be enough to get traffic from that person's site?

How much traffic is unclear but, yes... that's the essence of acquiring a backlink and generally, any backlink on a "newer" site is better for 'ranking' than not having one. Unless its a porn or a known/identified spam gambling site, for instance.

Also, I think those "footer links" to the web dev company are devalued by Google with their page segmentation. In-content links are the real links that pass value.

Indeed.
If you happen to manage multiple 'topically' or geo-related client websites, where there's a real connection, the best method of obtaining more usefulness from embedding a link back to your own site, is in copy, toward the top of a page, with somewhat manipulated anchor text and textually relevant copy.

You could consider asking them for a referral in the form of a write-up and make a page about it - with the link,

Just one of many related ideas. An interview page of sorts would also work.

Thanks but not sure any stranger would want an added page on their site just for me?

Also the non Profit sites I look at list their sponsors only in the form of a link and logo, no content text really.

Eric Ward (Link Moses) often said: "Links that would exist, even if Google and Bing did not, are almost always the ones that provide the most value. That's both in traffic and in rankings."

Guys, if a site you got a, link from should get penalized, does this mean you will too or have negative effects on your end?
