This question is for Joy Hawkins but suggestions from other experts are also welcome. I read Joy saying in the recently released local search ranking factors 2021 on whitespark that "Having a proper internal linking strategy is like an SEO goldmine." I am curious which tool Joy uses for internal linking or if she can recommend one.

Hey Matt,

We don't use a tool per say. We evaluate what pages drive conversions (or have the potential to) using Google Analytics and then build out internal links to those pages.

We use Google Sheets. 1 column for the page/URL, then 3 more columns for keywords (target keyword, then 2nd and 3rd). We also pull in our data from ahrefs and BrightLocal for tracking and Google Keywords for search volume (monthly breakdown). Then actual traffic used (Google Analytics), and our notes, etc.

In terms of tools, most of it is brainpower, but if you're using WordPress there are too "assistant tools" that we use - "Link Suggestions" inside RankMath, and also the "Link Whisper" plugin. These are great "did you remember to link" type tools, but as with anything automated, human review and logic take precedence over link suggestion tools.

We rely on Google Sheets and Excel a lot.

Thanks, Joy! By the way, we are using Inlinks for internal linking optimization and it seems to be working very well for us.

Thanks, Conor. This is really very helpful.
