Internal link on the same page

Can you please help me to understand why our competitors are using "Target keywords" as an internal link on the same page? They have made the target keyword clickable on the home page which is going to the home page. Does this really make an impact?

They both are ranking on the top of Google by doing this.

Any idea?

One thing is for sure, that is not the reason why they are ranking at the top of the search results page. If that's what they're claiming then it sounds like they're into the snake oil.

My guess is that it's actually just a mistake.

@mandeepb If there's FAQPage markup on the URL, there's a chance that they have the link as part of the answer so that the link shows up in the answer in the SERP. Check if that's the case. Otherwise, I don't know why they'd be doing that
