Looking for some recommendations on best image sizes & orientations for Google MyBusiness posts and product images.

Specifically I am trying to determine what size image shows best on desktop preview, desktop full-size (when users click on post/product image), mobile preview, and mobile full-size (when users click on post/product image). As an example, it seems that landscape images (say 1280 x 960) get cropped on preview, but look great when users click to see full-size. Similar issues with square and profile orientation. Some orientations look great in some situations, but not in all situations.

What guidelines would you have for optimizing how images show for GMB??

So we've found that the best size to use for the image for a Google post is 960X720. However, in the preview mode, the top and bottom will get chopped off. For a long time, we found that if you put the most important part of the post about a half-inch from the top and an inch from the bottom it would keep from being truncated as the preview is center-weighted, however, we've noticed in the last few months that Google seems to be able to 'track' the words on the posts now so that standard of half-inch and inch isn't quite as strong anymore. The preview will keep the 960 width but cuts the height to about 500 pixels so make sure your post's good stuff falls within that range.

For Google products we use 940X780 which works perfectly when the product is clicked on, in the previewer the pixels get cut to about 940x575 and again Google will shift that view to where they 'think' the most important information is so just make sure your product info falls within that range centered if possible. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much Becky! Just to get a bit of clarification, when you say above, "make sure your post's good stuff falls within that range," it's not clear if that range is still in the center of the post. It sounds like Google is cropping differently based on what it *thinks* is most important - so sometimes it's center-focused, sometimes it's top-focused, etc. Is that what you are seeing?

So Google still favors center-weighting we've noticed but if you were to put the words of your post right at the top as long as they are fairly big and stand out against your background Google does seem able to shift the positioning of the preview to capture them. It doesn't always work though so it's worth taking a quick second to check the preview if you haven't placed your main content somewhat in the center of the post.

1:1 (square).
