I am an electrical contractor, I used to do all different types of residential electrical work and I used those various services to add keywords and content on the various pages of my website. But now I only install electric vehicle chargers. That is the only job that I do and it’s all I want to do.

My website is now old and built on Joomla with outdated modules that are unsupported, so it’s time for a new website.

Here’s the rub: I think most people find me by searching for “Electrician”. Most of my customers are informed that they have to have a licensed electrician install their charger. I don’t think they are searching for keywords about EV charging. I think they are just looking for a local reputable electrician.

My concern is if I take all of the other tasks that electrician generally do off of my website, then I’m not going to rank very well when people search for electrician. And therefore lose the future calls that I would have normally gotten from people looking to have their EV chargers installed.

With that said, I am only an electrician, not an SEO pro. So I’m curious what you guys think?

If EV charging is all you care about, I’d definitely hyper focus on EV chargers with the new site. There’s no reason to try and rank for services you don’t want to do.

Even if you add content for other electrical services, ranking for general “electrician” keywords can be tough, so focusing on a niche service and making sure your site ranks for all the keywords people are searching for around EV chargers is a solid strategy. I think you’ll be surprised how much traffic you can pick up if your whole site is built around that topic.

You’ll need more than just a couple of service pages, though. There are probably a ton of questions people ask about EV chargers and electric cars in general, so aim to answer as many of those as you can on your site and build out as much content as possible around your niche.
