Google tests lots of things. Adding a call button to organic snippets makes sense on a mobile device. Less so on desktop.

What's more interesting to analyse is from where Google has pulled the number. Was it the meta description, opengraph, the page content, a widget. Did Google look for a 'tel' anchor? The schema would have been the best source but this business uses the useless Yoast schema generator and doesn't include the telephone number.

More research is needed.

Tricky but doable. Try HVAC Tustin and scroll down, it's not the top results, but somewhere between page 2-3

I got it to show! The business is on page 2, but the call button is there and it is indeed organic.

It might be a very limited test. This wouldn't make Google any money if it is truly an organic feature, so I doubt they would roll it out fully, but we can dream they would!

It's been over a year since that came out. It can be triggered by having the telephone number displayed on the landing page ( Preferably the main header or menu ). I've seen more consistency when the whole number is displayed rather than just the Phone Icon.


Agencies that manages multi location business should definitely take this into account. It's a nice little trick. Somewhat similar to having a video at a prominent location on your web page

It is also not rank dependent , authority dependent and it works with/without schema markups

I would love to use this trick if I can get it to work reliably across multiple profiles. I imagine it is not consistent from search to search.

Also, do you know if dynamic number insertion for website call tracking would prevent this call button from showing?

I was sitting on the couch inside the mall waiting for my wife to end her shopping and searched for HVAC in the area since two of my buddies are engaged in the industry and I am helping them with SEO.


Saw it for the very first time ever. Maybe it's been there forever, we just didn't pay attention to it and started noticing once Google killed local pack call buttons and enlarged paid call buttons. IDK

1- Phone Number with TEL tag ( Must be able to click/ bring up the dialer if on mobile). It can also be a " Call Now" button
2 -Local business Schema markups ( I use callrail so I usually add my main line + dynamic phone numbers)
3- Footer will not work, I've tried ( Must be above the fold )


Local keywords you can test :

Service + location
Service + Zipcode
Service + Near me

they tested this using both the phone number and the business address. when the business address was displayed it was heavily abused with direction requests. They kept the phone number, since it still helps improve CTR.

Instagram profiles can have this enhancement as well
