Google tests lots of things. Adding a call button to organic snippets makes sense on a mobile device. Less so on desktop.

What's more interesting to analyse is from where Google has pulled the number. Was it the meta description, opengraph, the page content, a widget. Did Google look for a 'tel' anchor? The schema would have been the best source but this business uses the useless Yoast schema generator and doesn't include the telephone number.

More research is needed.
 
I got it to show! The business is on page 2, but the call button is there and it is indeed organic.

It might be a very limited test. This wouldn't make Google any money if it is truly an organic feature, so I doubt they would roll it out fully, but we can dream they would!

When did you notice this start? Is this your client or business?

It's been over a year since that came out. It can be triggered by having the telephone number displayed on the landing page ( Preferably the main header or menu ). I've seen more consistency when the whole number is displayed rather than just the Phone Icon.


Agencies that manages multi location business should definitely take this into account. It's a nice little trick. Somewhat similar to having a video at a prominent location on your web page

It is also not rank dependent , authority dependent and it works with/without schema markups

Is there a reliable way to get this to trigger? If you have the full number displayed in the header and footer already, is there anything else that can be done to influence this?

I would love to use this trick if I can get it to work reliably across multiple profiles. I imagine it is not consistent from search to search.

Also, do you know if dynamic number insertion for website call tracking would prevent this call button from showing?
