I had a “brilliant” idea and now I think I might be a chump. Luckily I haven’t attempted to apply it yet.

My kid’s employer needs more leads for a pet euthanasia service. I would like to help them get more leads and start a new business of my own getting leads for small businesses on a free trial basis. But the more I read about GBP the more nervous I am about inadvertently causing trouble for the client.

It seems to me that the obvious idea would be to set up a somewhat generic site with good local SEO and maybe even run ads to it. I would build the site free and pay all expenses. If it works, great, I take a bit of the revenue after a period of free leads to prove the concept.

This generic site would allow me to get complete visibility for all marketing channels and analytics into what is working and what isn’t. It would also allow me to recover gracefully if I make a mistake if that would otherwise get their site penalized. Reading all the problems people encounter with GBP is giving me a case of early onset PTSD.

It has been a long time since I did SEO and I am becoming dimly aware that lead generation sites like this may be a bad thing? If so, how could I perform experiments without endangering someone else’s site?

I hasten to say I would be doing this on a completely white hat basis using organic SEO techniques (unless these lead gen sites are not considered white hat :0).
