We have a new client that uses a phone number with an area code outside of their service area. Apparently this is cell phone. They occasionally do business in that area code, but most of their business is conducted in a totally different area code.

Could this be a problem?

Tanks,

Marc

Hi Marc,

It's not ideal but I'm not sure it's a deal breaker. I'd say the most important issue is NAP consistency and if that's the number they've used for years and it's in all their citations then that is key.

However since Google local is all about relevance and proximity it could hurt somewhat, I'm just not sure if it's enough to warrant a phone # change, especially if it's already in lots of citations.

Do they currently rank?

Thank you Linda. They do not currently rank. They have almost no citations or back links. We have our job cut out for us...
