Just recently realized while training a couple new team members about best practices for writing Page Titles and Meta Descriptions, that internally we've not changed or evaluated the proper length (or width) for Meta Descriptions in a very long time. I've forever said, so many times, to make sure not to exceed 150 to 160 characters (920–1,000 pixels). However, with this group, when I started explaining about mobile search results typically only showing between 110 to 120 characters (680 pixels), it hit me square in the face. Why are we still writing meta descriptions up to 160 characters?
Most of us know that Meta Descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, but it does affect CTR, so it has the potential of an indirect ranking factor. However, focusing on the arguable CTR impact of a Meta Description, what are other SEOs on the forum doing? Are you keeping your Meta Descriptions to a max of 120 characters or do you front load the first 120 characters and put the less important copy at the end, to a max of 160 characters?
