I understand that trying to include actual words"near me" is foolish, and that what google looks for is evidence you are indeed either located close to the searcher or you are located in the area specifically asked about in the search (City or zip). So I have created some service area pages for citys that are adjoining to my city, but in my main city it looks like traffic just goes to the homepage - I don't have a service page for it. Would it be better to create a service area page for my specific city?

Hi! Ideally, your homepage should be optimized for the main service. Similarly, you want to optimize the page for conversions. So if you get traffic to your homepage, all you need to do is convert that traffic. No need for an additional service page that targets the same service.

You can certainly test and create a service area page for your primary city - just be sure not to overoptimize it to minimize the risk of outranking/cannibalizing your homepage - you may find some additional keywords your service area page ranks for, but your homepage doesn't.
