Yes. Lots and lots of examples of this. And not just wix or wordpress. Pretty much all site builders will struggle with SEO when measured against a modern CMS where you have full control.

But even then, a poorly configured CMS (like wordpress) with a ton of plugins and bloated theme will do less well than a slick, fast and properly structured site.

Google scores your site performance at 58/100. With wix you won't get much better. A well built wordpress site can easily score 99/100. Note that performance is just one of many ranking signals so treat this as just an indicator.

The more important ranking signals are content, navigation, structure, trustmarks and calls to action. Then there are a whole load of technical considerations that you can't fix with wix.

I have, on more that one occasion, been told that my Wix site will rank lower than say a Wordpress site.

Any validity to this claim?

There was a time when this was true. Wix has improved the platform thanks to my good friend Mordy Oberstein. He brought in several SEO experts to help improve the platform. People trash Wix, because they don’t know how to navigate the platform. They push Wordpress so they can add their favorite plugins. Some plugins are bloated and will decrease the loading time. Wordpress has a lot of limitations.

As will some themes. But a well configured WP site with the right plugins will be fast. Not sure of these limitations of which you speak. There is far more flexibility with any CMS than you will get with Wix.

However, I do agree with you that wix is much much better than it used to be.
